Sofiane is a fifteen-year-old pupil from Biskra. Last year, he noticed that his grandfather often forgot to water the palm trees in the family garden, so he decided to build a small automatic watering system. He used a cheap sensor, some pipes and an old phone charger. He worked on his project for three months after school because he wanted to help his family.
In May, Sofiane presented his invention at a national science fair in Algiers. The judges liked it very much and he won the second prize. Today, Sofiane wants to study engineering at university. He says: "Science is not only in books; it is everywhere around us."
Part One: Reading (14 pts)
A. Comprehension (7 pts)
- Read and write True or False: a) Sofiane is from Algiers. b) He worked on his project for three months. c) He won the first prize.
- Answer: a) Why did Sofiane build the watering system? b) What does he want to study?
- What do the underlined words refer to? "he decided" ; "The judges liked it".
B. Mastery of language (7 pts)
- Find in the text the opposite of: a) expensive ≠ ...... ; b) lost ≠ ......
- Put the verbs in brackets in the past simple: "Sofiane (go) ...... to the fair and (meet) ...... many young scientists."
- Join with "because" or "so": a) He was tired. He went to bed early. b) She won the prize. Her project was original.
- Classify the words according to the pronunciation of final "-s": pipes – trees – judges – books.
Part Two: Integrated situation (6 pts)
Your school magazine is preparing a page about young inventors. Write a short paragraph (60–80 words) about an invention you would like to make. Say what it is, why it is useful and how it works.
